Happy Friday!  It’s my pleasure to introduce a few friends to the blog audience this morning.  Devan, owner of DNA Auto Detailing, has always been an Acura guy.  When I met him in November 2011 at a car show in Gilbert, Arizona, he was driving this exceptionally clean White Diamond Pearl 2003 Acura TL.

devan_03_tl

He recently sold that when it had about 184,000 miles on the clock.  His new ride is this gorgeous Alabaster Silver 2006 Acura TL.  It’s loaded to the brim with the Technology package.

devan_with_tl

Here are a couple pictures of our silver bullets together when he stopped by earlier this week.

ilx_tl

The first thing I noticed when I got inside Devan’s TL was how clean it smelled.  He’s using a Febreeze air freshener and I must say it was amazing!

devan_interior

Devan has made some nice upgrades to the lighting in his TL.  All interior lights, as well as the license plate lights, are now LED.

devan_tl_back

Sweet ride!  Congrats, Devan.

Several weeks ago, I introduced you to Mirel who’s owned a few Legends.  His latest ride is a Granada Black Pearl 1993 LS coupe 6-speed that he picked up two months ago.  He recently got the car back from a full repaint.  It turned out fantastic!

mirel_with_coupes

The factory spoiler with LED brake light was added to the trunklid.  There are only a couple of updates left:  wheel refinish & driver’s seat leather re-upholstery.

This coupe has just over 111,000 miles on it.

It was great to catch up with Mirel for a few minutes.

The last feature today is a vehicle with mileage that even surpasses my Legend’s in distance driven.

I met a guy named Paul via the local “Phoenix Automotive Press Association,” otherwise known as PAPA.  Paul owns a moving company called Atlasta Moving Company and his tried-and-true Chevy Silverado 3500 pickup is his workhorse.  It has 602,732 miles on the original engine.

duramax_odometer

Whoa.

paul_truck_1

Paul tells this truck’s impressive story best, so I’ll let him do the talking:

The Silverado 3500 4×4 is a 2002. I purchased it with 2 miles on it from Van Chevrolet in Scottsdale, Arizona in late September of 2001. What sold me on this truck primarily was the Duramax engine mated to an Allison automatic transmission. Over the last 2 years, I’ve changed the synthetic oil ( which I’ve used all it’s life) to every 5000 miles instead of 3000 miles, since money became tight during the recession.

The only complaint I have with this engine has been the injectors. It’s currently on its 5th set, and at $4800.00 per set of eight including installation, it’s expensive! I’m on my second transfer case. Even though it’s a shift on the fly “four wheel drive”, the transfer case is constantly engaged, causing “non four wheel drive” wear and tear. I’m also on my second transmission solenoid. That has been the only issue with the regularly maintained tranny.

I had a head gasket blow at about 500,000 miles, thus warping the aluminum heads. The amazing part of that story was that I was on a road trip of about 1200 miles, and I continued that trip with the blown head gasket, stopping often to add coolant as the “low coolant” light came on. I was towing a fully loaded enclosed trailer at that time, made my delivery, and made it back home to Phoenix.

I switched to a cowl hood about a year ago after a defective set of Yokohama tires blew out the drivers side front fender, bumper, and partial hood. A few weeks later, the passenger rear Yokohama blew out requiring a new rear fender. Other than that, all body panels are factory. The only other recent upgrade was that I had the front seats recovered, as it looked as if there was a dog fight within the cockpit! I was missing chunks of leather and foam due to wear and tear.

paul_truck_2

It’s great to see that Paul’s Silverado is still getting the job done, even after all those miles.

paul_truck_3

paul_truck_4

The next time I need a heavy duty hauler, I’m definitely gonna grab a GM.

Keep on truckin’, Paul!

Last month, you met an Acura driver who’s trying to steal the high-mileage crown from me – and in a much newer car than my 1994 Legend.  Josh from Boise was featured as a Reader’s Ride with his Diamond White Pearl 2005 Acura TSX.

josh_tsx_odometer

Now, Josh has taken his Acura ownership to the next level by launching his own blog.  “TSX Travels” (follow the hyperlink) will capture Josh’s adventures in his high-mileage TSX as he travels all over the state of Idaho for work.

Make special note of his Maintenance Logs section where he’s posted in detail all the records on his car.  This should serve as an invaluable resource for others who have an Acura TSX and who are looking to achieve similar mileage.

josh_tsx_travels_banner

Josh also plans to share pictures & stories about driving destinations within the great state of Idaho, since he spends so much time exploring the state’s scenic backroads.  You might even see a photo occasionally of the new 2013 Acura RDX that he just added to his family’s garage.

Stop on by TSX Travels to have a look at what Josh has been up to in his now-375,000-mile TSX!

Labor Day Weekend Fun: Chuck’s Ragtop

Hey, here’s something you don’t see every day:  Legend convertible!

convertible_ride

This 1988 L coupe was converted when new (at a cost of around $10,000) to a convertible.  The car today has about 111,000 miles on it but runs amazingly for being 25 years old.  Chuck, Paul, and I took it for a Sunday drive around the Phoenix East Valley area.  Wind buffeting was pretty extreme in the backseat but the car rode as smooth as could be.

chuck_driving_convertible

I commented to Chuck, “This thing sure gets a lot of looks.”  He responded, “They’re not looking at the car; they’re looking at those 3 crazy guys who are insane for driving with the top down when it’s 105 degrees.”

convertible_front

Hot or not, we had our fun tooling around in this unique ride.

convertible

It was an action-packed weekend playing with cars.  On Friday night, we welcomed road tripper Ben who I featured recently on a Reader’s Ride.  Last weekend, Ben was at the National Acura Legend Meet in North Carolina and he’s been working his way back to the west coast via some exciting destinations (Jacksonville, New Orleans, Austin, and El Paso).

  • Left:  Chuck’s 1993 Sirius White Pearl Legend LS coupe 6-speed with 31,000 miles
  • Right:  Ben’s 1992 Frost White Legend LS coupe automatic with 190,000 miles

chuck_ben_legends

Chuck (same owner of the convertible pictured above) was gracious enough to bring the low-mileage coupe out for the occasion, even though it was raining.  He told me this was only the second time it’s ever been driven in the rain.

chuck_legend_rear

We receive over 300 days of sunshine in Phoenix per year, but this wasn’t one of them.

chuck_coupe

We tried out a restaurant that’s been featured on the Travel Channel in Chandler, Arizona called “Chino Bandido.”  I must say I was impressed – especially with the sugar cookies they gave out for dessert!

chuck_tyson_ben_chino_bandido

Later, Ben came over to my place to visit.

ben_tyson_legend

My Legend coupe got a much-needed bath after the long journey to North Carolina.  I also took the time to polish the chrome exhaust tips with some Mother’s Mag & Aluminum polish.  The results are pretty striking!

clean_tips

On Saturday morning, the Legend went in for a 5W30 oil & filter change at Acura of Tempe.  I was able to get this service for free since I use a punch card and had accumulated enough punches for a freebie.  It had been exactly 4,300 miles since the last oil change (performed on June 26).  I believe that might have been the longest I’ve ever driven the car between changes, but I’ll have to check the maintenance spreadsheet to be sure.

service_bay

My friend Paul who drives a TL SH-AWD stopped by to visit, too.  The lounge amenities at the dealership make it a great place to hang out.  Cookies, chips, and drinks – not to mention WiFi and leather chairs.  It’s better than home!

paul_tyson_at_acura

The technician’s inspection notes about the Legend’s mechanical needs were as follows:

  • Driver’s P/S Rack Boot Leaking
  • Differential Leaking
  • Transmission Leaking
  • P/S Fluid Low

I had asked for “no wash” and they complied, which was great since I had just detailed the car by hand this week.

coupe_at_acura_of_tempe

Ever wondered what the private party resale value is on a car with over 500,000 miles?  A friend of mine ran some numbers on the value of my Legend, just for kicks.  Unfortunately, the Edmunds website didn’t even want to give him a $ figure!  A dialog box popped up saying, “Total Mileage Cannot Exceed 400,000 Miles.”  Oh, is that so?

mileage_notification

Next, he went to Kelley Blue Book.  These numbers are pretty promising.  $2,472 as a private party value in “Excellent” condition, even with the mileage factored in.  Not too shabby!

blue_book_Legend

In ILX news, I noticed that my front left marker light has now burned out.  I’ve actually been anticipating this for quite some time.  Ever since I first started driving the car in June 2012, I’ve driven with headlights + foglights on for safety almost 100% of the time.  So it’s no surprise that after thousands of hours of illumination, a bulb has finally given up.

ilx_marker_light

I stopped by Autozone to see if they had such a bulb in stock, but was told that it’s a dealership-only thing.  Bummer.  I will fix it and roll onward!  I’m having a great time with the car as the summer heat slowly starts saying goodbye.  I can’t wait until it’s windows-down weather in Phoenix again.

Thanks Ben, Paul, and Chuck for some fun weekend times!

Reader’s Ride: Mirel’s 1993 Legend LS Coupe 6-Speed; NALM Travels

Posted in Legend, Reader's Ride on August 20, 2013 by tysonhugie

Odometer (ILX):  52,517

I’ll never forget the day I met Mirel.  It was a beautiful sunny springtime Phoenix day in 2006 and I was cruising eastbound on Dunlap Avenue in Glendale, Arizona in my 1994 Legend coupe.

To my delight, I saw approaching in my sideview mirror what appeared to be another Legend.  Its red paint was eye-catching.  I slowed down just slightly so that the Legend following me would get closer and pass by on my left.  Sure enough, up drove a super-clean Milano Red 1994 L coupe with Mirel at the wheel.  We stared at each others’ cars as we rolled alongside each other, and then I made the gesture of “pull over!”  He knew what I meant.

Soon we were standing next to our cars in a parking lot and exchanging contact information while talking about Legends.  Since that day, Mirel and I have remained good friends.  His Acura ownership experience began long before he bought that red coupe.  He previously owned this green Integra.

mirelintegra

And also this Rosewood Brown Metallic 1991 Legend L coupe.

mireloldcoupe

Below are pictures from a very small (3-car) Legend meet in Phoenix on March 1, 2006.  My Legend had about 210,000 miles on it at the time.  I can’t remember exactly where this summit is but I need to get back up there for another round of pictures soon.

mirel_with_red_coupe

The Sherwood Green 1994 L sedan in the middle belonged to our friend Chris.

meet1

We got creative with the pictures and climbed up on the hillside for a new angle on things.

meet2

Hoods down, now.

meet3

Mirel’s Milano Red coupe was an automatic.  Those chrome wheels gave it plenty of bling.

meet4

At that time, my Legend was wearing 17″ wheels from a 2004 Acura TL.  I also had a McCulloch 6000K HID headlight kit and some European Domestic Market (EDM) clear corner lenses installed.

meet5

Mirel’s red coupe was sold not long after that first meet-up, when he picked up a super clean 1994 LS 6-speed in a highly sought-after black on black color combination.  Soon, however, his young family outgrew the car and it was also sold two years ago.  As of last week, Mirel is now back in the Legend game.

mirel_legend_with_ilx

This is his 1993 LS coupe 6-speed in Granada Black Pearl with Ivory Interior.  The car has only 110,000 miles on it.  That comes out to just 5,500 per year over its 20 years of life.  Low mileage!  Mirel found the car listed on Tucson craigslist and called the seller right away.  That night, he made the purchase and drove it home to Phoenix (about a 125-mile trip).  He called me from the road and I could sense his excitement.

mirel_with_legend

This car is a rarity with that kind of mileage.  He gave me the key and I drove it around the block.  It sure does ride nice and smooth.  All the gears were flawless, the clutch had plenty of life, and the suspension & steering were tight.

mirel_coupe_odometer

Aside from a few tears on the driver’s seat, the rest of the interior is in excellent shape, including the factory floormats.  I couldn’t find any cracks in the clearcoat on his burlwood center console trim.

mirel_coupe_interior

The Type II engine is barely broken in.

mirel_coupe_engine

A few cosmetic flaws, including the clearcoat deterioration on the tops of the roof & trunk lid, will soon be addressed.  For now, Mirel is just thrilled to be back behind the wheel of a Legend.

mirel_coupe_right_rear

Congratulations my friend!  And welcome back to the family.

Here’s what my next 6 days will look like!  I’m traveling to the 9th Annual National Acura Legend Meet (NALM) in Asheville, North Carolina in my 1994 Legend coupe.  I know my car is ready for these 3,922 miles.  But am I?

Stay tuned as I’ll make every attempt to post each night at my planned stops along the way (flags on the map).  Northern leg is the outbound; southern leg is the return.

Hank Bought a Bus

Posted in Reader's Ride on August 19, 2013 by tysonhugie

Special D25 Feature Story:

It’s one thing for me to drive 3,000 miles in a weekend in the comfort of a 2013 Acura ILX that can zip through traffic, provide all the creature comforts of a luxurious atmosphere, and all the while get excellent mileage.  But can you imagine taking a cross-country 5,000-mile drive in a school bus?

hank

That’s what Hank Butitta is doing.  But this isn’t just any old school bus.  This is a bus that has been completely gutted by Hank as part of his architecture studies in Wisconsin and made into an RV.  To cap off his achievement, he’s embarked on a trip involving friends & family as they together join on this unique adventure.

hank_route

The last time I checked, Hank is in the Pacific Northwest.  He’s posting daily about his travels.

Check out the introductory video here:

That bus looks a lot like the one belonging to my brother that I drove in March and blogged about.  Hank’s detailed blog with great pictures is here.  It’s definitely worth a read.  Maybe someday our paths will intersect!

As a side note, it’s no mystery that my love of roads and of maps go hand in hand.  You might find these pictures of 40 Maps That Will Help You Make Sense of the World as interesting as I did.

Reader’s Ride: Josh’s 2005 Acura TSX

Posted in Reader's Ride on August 10, 2013 by tysonhugie

I found a car that’s well on its way to million mile status.  Check out the odometer on this 2005 Acura TSX that’s driven an average of over 46,000 miles per year.  That’s right:  370,923 miles!

josh_tsx_odometer

Several months ago, I’d seen a fellow Acura fan post on Facebook about his high-mileage TSX.  We ended up sharing stories about our experiences in “life beyond 100,000 miles” in an Acura.

acura_ilx_tsx_fronts

These two Acuras share the same 2.4 liter 4 cylinder motor.

ilx_tsx_josh

Josh and I finally had a chance to meet last night when he brought his White Diamond Pearl beauty over to a hotel where I was staying on the west side of Boise, Idaho.

josh_2005_tsx

Josh bought this TSX brand new.  He is in the insurance business and currently drives around 5,000 miles per month.  Josh says that his car is 100% dealer maintained and the service team at Lyle Pearson Acura knows him personally.  In fact, when they call him for an after-service follow-up, “Smooth and silky, as always, Josh?”  is their greeting.

tsx_ilx_tl

This car is equipped with all the bells & whistles that were available in 2005, including the navigation.

josh_tsx_interior

Check out that bug collection!

tsx_bumper_bugs

Josh and I took the TSX for a spin around the block and I must say – even with the original suspension, the car rides great!

tyson_in_josh_tsx

My favorite part:  He’s even still left the blue plastic covering over the aluminum door sills since the car was new 8 years ago.

Thanks, Josh, for meeting up!  Drive to Five!  I’ll be keeping tabs on your progress.

When I moved to Arizona nearly 8 years ago, the Acura Legend enthusiast network was one of my means for meeting new friends in the area.  Chuck was one of those first people who I connected with.

In February 2007, I owned a 207,000 mile white Acura Legend GS 6-speed manual.  At the time, Chuck had two beautiful Sirius White Pearl 1993 Legends.  We decided to have a “Pearl White Block Party” and I shared a few pictures on the Legend forums at the time.

white_legends_together

Chuck’s sedan had 61,000 miles on it.  His 6-speed coupe had 17,000 miles on it.

white_legends_together-2

Today, Chuck’s sedan is gone but the coupe lives on, now with just under 31,000 miles on the odometer.

chuck_with_1993_legend

Purchased in December 2004 with 16,000 miles on it, this car sees the road only when it’s time to head to the golf course (once a week or so).

The license plate “AZLEGND” is synonymous with Chuck’s username on the Acura Legend forums.

The wheels on the coupe are 16″ aftermarket wheels that were once on Chuck’s sedan.

Underneath those sheepskin seat covers, the condition of the leather is near-new.  In fact, the whole car smells fresh.

Here’s a start-up and very short drive video of this amazingly well-kept Legend.

Readers with a keen eye may have noticed a first generation Legend in Chuck’s garage.  There’s a story behind that one.

In March 2010, I went to take a look at a rare custom Legend convertible about 75 miles from my home.  I posted a pretty detailed write-up to the forums at the time, but I didn’t end up pulling the trigger on it for myself.  The car was a 1988 L model automatic.  It had 87,000 miles on its 2.7 liter engine at the time I took it for a spin.

convertible1

Over 3 years later, the car popped back up on Phoenix craigslist a couple of weeks ago, and Chuck had the honor of scooping this beauty up.  It became the 5th Acura Legend that he’s owned.  Now at 111,000 miles, the car is in worthy Legend enthusiast hands and I’m excited to see what he’ll do with it.  I can’t think of a better ride for enjoying the perfect Phoenix winters with the top down.

legend_coupes_1

Supposedly this convertible was one of only 12 conversions completed at the time.  It’s nicely put together.

legend_vert_1

Can’t wait to take this one for a spin!  Thanks, Chuck, for your friendship and for letting me borrow some tools from time to time!

I happened to be driving my Legend GS sedan when I stopped by on Tuesday evening.

This old girl is sitting at about 144,200 miles currently.  It resides in storage but comes out to play about once every 2-3 weeks.

Reader’s Ride: Michael’s 2009 Acura TSX

Please allow me to introduce another fan of the Acura brand to you today.  The model year 2009 marked some (literal) big changes for the Acura TSX sport sedan.  The 2nd generation TSX got longer and wider than its predecessor which debuted in 2004.  My new friend Michael from Chicago owns a stunning Vortex Blue 2009 Acura TSX and he stopped by to visit while road-tripping through the area on Tuesday evening.

Here we are.  Michael’s car has 55,658 miles on the odometer.

michael_tyson_tsx_ilx

He is currently 1,740 miles from home and he is confident that the TSX will get him home safe and sound.  I’m sure it will, too.  He said his oil life indicator still shows 90% useful life remaining.

tsx_taillight

These two sport sedans have each served as a gateway to the Acura brand, inviting young professional buyers to experience the brand and work their way up the ranks to other Acura models.

tsx_facing_ilx

I’m a huge fan of this Vortex Blue color.  I’d be interested in seeing how it compares next to Acura’s new “Fathom Blue Pearl” which debuted on the 2013 ILX.

michael_tsx_right_rear

“Beak” grilles.  Though brutally criticized since their birth in 2009, I think that Acura’s signature “shield” front end has matured gracefully over the years.

ilx_tsx_grilles

Here’s the cockpit of Michael’s ride.  It’s a heck of a lot cleaner than mine would be during the middle of a road trip.

michael_tsx_interior

There’s something addicting about Acura ownership.  It seems none of us are content with just one car in the garage.  Michael’s other ride is a 1994 Legend LS coupe automatic in Milano Red.  We took my Legend for a spin around the block.

michael_with_my_legend

Michael shared these pictures with me of his own Legend.  It’s equipped with JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) one-piece headlamps and factory foglights.  Unlike my car, his has a 4-speed automatic transmission.

michael_legend_front_right

This body looks pretty great for a 19-year-old car!  It has around 230,000 miles on it.

michael_legend_right_side

Love the look of the rear spoiler with the 1994-95 Legend coupe trunk lid.

michael_legend_back

This car makes me miss the red Legend LS coupe that my mom used to own.  Here are a couple of pictures from June 2010 when I had three Legends at my house.

milano_dmms

My neighbors were rolling their eyes when I took these photos for sure.

three_legends

The rest of that photoset from 3 years ago is posted here in the Acura Legend forums.

Thanks, Michael, for swinging by and paying me a visit!  I hope to return the favor the next time I’m rolling through Illinois.

For anyone who can’t get enough Legend talk, stop on by the WordPress blog called Project 130R which is put together by my friend Erik.  He’s recently featured two very clean 1st generation Legends that belong to my friends James and Ryan.  Check out Project 130R at the link here.

Original 1992 Acura Legend Owner: Ben’s Story

Commitment:  Can you imagine keeping the same car for over 20 years?  That’s what my friend Ben has done.  He’s been a proud Legend owner for twice as long as I have.  As for many of us, his love for Acura started before he even had a driver license. This story centers around his 1992 Acura Legend LS coupe that he bought brand new.  I hope you’ll enjoy some of the highlights of his ownership experience as much as I enjoyed learning about them.

Ben’s car is still wearing its original “3D” series California plates dating back to its in-service date in 1993.  California plates have since sequentially moved forward to today’s “7A.”  It’s extremely rare to see a vehicle still wearing its first combination.  And look at that stack of registration stickers – 20 of them, stuck on top of one another.

registration_stickers

Ben’s Legend story started was 14 years old when he first took a ride in his friend’s father’s 1989 Seattle Silver Legend sedan and was amazed at the smoothness and features it had.

When Ben was 19 years old, he bought his Frost White Legend coupe with black interior from Acura of Mountain View in Mountain View, California (the building has since been converted into a pool hall).  The asking price was $29,995 and it was the last 1992 Legend on the lot.

I still remember the day I saw it for the first time, and the following day when we bought it.  I still remember the salesman, Steve Cheng.  I wonder where he is today.  I wonder if he’s still selling cars.  If so, it would be cool to re-enact the key handoff (with the unused keys) in the Tyson tradition!  If we could find him, he would probably be in his 60s today.  I remember he told me after we bought the car that I had made the right choice.  I had previously had my heart set on a 3G Nissan Maxima. He said that long after the Maxima is gone and forgotten, the Legend would still be a nice, classy car, and he was right!

Ben’s car had just 65 miles on the odometer when he took delivery.  He still has all of his original paperwork as well as documentation on the car’s complete life history. These are a couple of pictures from before he added an OEM spoiler and some 16″ Legend GS wheels to replace the 15″ stock 7-spokers.

Ben has owned several other very elite rides over the years, including a BMW M3, Toyota Supra, and Acura NSX, but he’s hung onto the Legend longer than any of those.  As the years went by, he racked up the miles traveling to Legend meets and other destinations.

June 12, 1997 – Ben’s first recorded attendance at an organized Acura Legend meet.  This event from 16 years ago has since been succeeded by dozens of meets across the country.  Today’s National Acura Legend Meet – NALM – carries on in spirit the intent of this historic meet-up.  It’s something special to meet & interact with other individuals who share our passions.

Today, Ben’s car has 183,835 miles on it.

ben_odometer

He’s based in China and only travels back to the U.S. a few times a year, but the car is regularly exercised and it has become an icon at the annual NALM due to its ownership history and condition.

When I asked Ben what’s kept him driving the Legend for all this time, he said:

It was my first brand new car, and has been with me for almost my entire adult life.  It was with me when I graduated college, been through several job changes, friends have come and gone, other cars have come and gone, I’ve moved several times (including in and out of the country), but through all this, the Legend has been a constant in my life, and has never let me down or left me stranded at the side of the road.

Ben added that he also kept the Legend because he hasn’t yet seen a worthy replacement for it.  His maintenance history with the Legend has been meticulous since the car was new:

  • Every 3000 Miles: Oil/Filter Change
  • Every 7500 Miles: Minor Service
  • Every 15000 Miles: Medium Service
  • Every 30000 Miles: Major Service
  • Every 75000 Miles: Replace Radiator
  • Every 90000 Miles: Replace Timing Belt, Water Pump

He’s on his 3rd battery, 2nd set of radiator hoses, 3rd set of brake rotors, and has replaced other parts as needed.

  • Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
  • Driver Interior Door Handle
  • Driver Exterior Door Handle
  • HVAC Blower Motor
  • Brake Master Cylinder
  • 2 CD Changers
  • Aspirator Fan
  • A/C Compressor clutch (a result of driving through a river)
  • 1 Set Shocks
  • Driver Window Regulator
  • Left and Right Rear Window Exterior Trim
  • Driver Side Window Switch
  • Catalytic Convertor Heat Shields Upper and Lower
  • 2 Bose Amps (1 under recall in the late ’90s)
  • 1 Set CV Joints
  • Taillights
  • Cupholder

The car will be undergoing a very extensive service prior to a cross-country trip from California to North Carolina in a couple of months.

Following are a few more notable landmarks that Ben has visited on his Legendary travels:

Continental Divide

Four Corners.  This should look familiar!

four_corners

Musical highway near Lancaster, California.  The grooves in the road play a song when driven across.  The road originally was funded in part by Honda because it was used in Civic commercials.  Residents complained about the noise levels, and the road was paved over in 2008.  However, due to its popularity, it was rebuilt in a more remote location.  I’m definitely going to travel out there soon!

It’s fitting to note that Ben’s love for Honda & Acura span beyond just this one single car.  Over the years, he’s owned several others.

Reader’s Ride: Paul’s 1998 Acura 3.2 TL

For many of us, our commitment to the Honda & Acura brand runs deep.  Today I’m spotlighting a friend who’s as big of a fan as I am.  He joins the blog from Atlanta, Georgia, and comes from a long history of Honda ownership, starting out with this 1988 Accord.

paul_accord

He later moved on to this 1994 Accord.

paul_accord_2

I’ll let Paul tell the rest of the story in his own words:

Here is the story about my 1998 Acura 3.2 TL. After pre-inspection I bought it one owner from Ed Voyles Acura in Atlanta GA, on 1/30/2008.  I love my TL; it’s very reliable. I bought the car with 114,582 miles on it.  The car was purchased new in Georgia and has been in Georgia its whole life.

paul_tl_front_left

paul_tl_right_rear

Here is a list of the repairs it’s had.

  • EGR valve replaced @ 112k right before delivery
  • 2 timing belt water pump services at 90k, 190k
  • New rack and pinion 210k
  • New starter 185k
  • New radiator, thermostat, hoses, condenser fan 178k
  • CV axles
  • Motor seals
  • Brakes and rotors
  • EGR cleaning
  • Paintless dent removal

The car now has 235k miles on it and still runs perfectly!  The only modifications that I have done are:  window tint, speakers, head unit, 2004 TSX rims, and had my driver’s seat covered with high quality leather and new padding inside.  It’s the original motor and trans.  Let me say that I probably would have lost confidence in her, had I not come across Drive to Five.  It was a real find for me, I couldn’t believe Tyson put 500k on his Legend.

In high school, my dad had a 1994 Legend LS 4dr in emerald green. My car was a Volvo 1990-740 sedan, so needless to say the Legend was special to me . I loved driving that car around back in those days.  It always made me feel special and important. The 1998 TL is the last Acura model with the Legend 3.2 and 4-speed automatic, as well being the last TL to be built in Japan. I wish they built a 6-spd, it would be the perfect car. I think the design has stood the test of time well. People always ask me what year it is.

I have been on some great road trips.  My favorites are:

  • Atlanta to San Francisco
  • Atlanta to Shelter island NY
  • Atlanta to Minocqua Wisconsin and upper Michigan

Thanks, Paul, for sharing your love for Honda!

Here’s the photo gallery he provided.  An “oops” shortly after purchase:

Pretty stellar looking car for being 16 years old and with 235,000 miles on it.

My ILX went in for a 40,000 mile oil change with 0W20 oil this week and came back with a clean bill of health.  Next Wednesday will mark my one-year anniversary of ILX ownership.

oil_change_receipt

Over the weekend, I parked next to a friend with similar automotive tastes.  I’ve known Jim for several years now.  He upgraded awhile back from a 1998 Acura 2.5 TL to a 2008 TL.  Love that bodystyle!

ilx_jims_tl

I’ll be traveling 3,949 miles this weekend but it’ll be on Southwest rather than on Acura Airlines.  I’m hitting up a 2-day music festival event called Orion Music & More.

orion_logo

Of the 30 or so bands in attendance, I’ll check out Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Deftones, and more.

I hope you all hit the highways this weekend and share your drives with ME instead!  Until next time.
