The return trek from NALM is fully underway!  I’ve already knocked out about half of my return trip to Phoenix from western North Carolina.

These are a few pictures from yesterday evening as the NALM festivities continued.  I met a ‘twin’ license plate car.  The GS 6-speed parked next to my coupe is registered in North Carolina but with exactly the same letter / number combination as I have on my Arizona plate.

6spd

I spent some time wandering around the area behind Creekside Lodge.  It was so relaxing to sit and listen to the river flowing.

Temperatures were pretty much perfect, too.

kevin

We feasted on a delicious BBQ meal catered by Fat Buddies Ribs & BBQ.  It was finger-lickin’ good.

dinner

Lee, Mike, Alex, and Eric were enjoying it for sure.

blue_shirts

Alan took center stage for a few announcements related to the itinerary for the following day’s events.

group

The highlight for me was when Kevin announced that he had a special award to present to me.  Wearing his “500,000 Mile” T-shirt, he called me up to present me with a certificate and a custom clock.

kevin_tyson

Check out these goods!  Apparently I had the highest mileage Legend at NALM with 524,741 miles on the odometer at the time of the ceremony.

award

Kevin has gone to great lengths to prepare a number of awards for many folks who traveled to NALM.  It really makes the trip worthwhile to be appreciated in such a way.  Thanks, Kevin!

kevin_tyson_award

In anticipation of the long couple of driving days ahead of me, I didn’t sleep all that well last night so I was up & out the door by around 5:30 in the morning.  The first few hours of my drive were along some backroads between Maggie Valley and Atlanta.  I ran into a lot of fog but otherwise it was an easy stretch.  I grabbed a quick parting shot of my car next to Alex’s Milano Red coupe before rolling out.

alex_tyson_morning

It was really 5:25, but I glanced at the clock in my car which is still set to Arizona time.  TOO EARLY!

time

Visited a friend’s place in the Alpharetta, Georgia area.  Nice homes out there!

alpharetta

Then it was on in to Smyrna off the 285 & 75 freeways.

arriving_atl

I grabbed a tank of 93 octane.  Kevin had presented me with a bottle of Chevron Techron fuel system treatment last night.  I feel like my car runs smoother after having run that through!

chevron_fueling

Two friends came by to meet up with me at a local Starbucks.   Paul drives a 1998 Acura 3.2 TL and Matt drives a 2008 Honda Accord coupe.  Both of them work for Honda/Acura and both found me via this blog.  It’s always great to meet fellow enthusiasts!

accord_legend_tl_2

You’ll notice that Paul’s super clean TL is equipped with 17″ wheels from an Acura TSX.  Paul was featured as a Drive to Five Reader’s Ride not long ago.

tl2

Matt’s Accord is one of the nicest I’ve ever seen.  I even noticed that he’d paid special attention to cleaning up his chrome exhaust tips.

tl_legend_accord

The Accord is just about to roll 80,000 miles.

matt

Check out that immaculate interior.

accord_interior

Paul’s TL is just under 240,000 miles, but you’d never know it from looking at the condition.

paul

Again, attention to detail here!  Looks amazing for being 15 years old and nearly 1/4 million miles.

tl_interior

After my meet-up with Matt & Paul, I continued my westbound trek on Interstate 20 in the Legend.

alabama

I didn’t linger very long in “Alabama the Beautiful” but I did use one of the rest areas right off the interstate.

alabama

Got this roll-over on a video, coming soon on YouTube.

And, spell this one out loud with me.  M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I.  Love that.

mississippi

Subway sandwich for me, a tank full of octane for the coupe, and we were off yet again!

gas_miss

“Chunky,” Mississippi.  Love the name of that town at Exit 121!

chunky

Here’s when I crossed the Mississippi River.  It’s the chief river of the largest drainage system in North America.  It flows 2,530 miles from Minnesota all the way to the Gulf of Mexico.  The bridge took awhile to cross!

mississippi_river

At the other end of the bridge, I entered Louisiana.  About the only notable thing that happened in Louisiana was in Shreveport when I saw a broken down Canterbury Green Legend sedan on the side of I-20.  This, for the record, has been the only Legend I’ve seen this entire trip – excluding those that were involved with NALM, of course.

As nightfall descended, I was already nearing my nightly destination of Dallas, Texas.

texas_sunset

There, I met up with my friend Brad who drives a 2012 Acura RDX.  Thanks Brad for swinging by!

tyson_brad

I’m staying at the home of my friend Jeff.  He is a fellow Legend fanatic who drives a near-twin to my car, except with a lot more upgrades!  Notice his car at the left below.  It has JDM one-piece headlights but that’s just the tip of the iceberg of all the things he’s done to it.

jeff_and_tyson

Desert Mist Metallics in the driveway.

dmm

Jeff has “plasti-dipped” his emblems to give them a black finish.  It looks great with his blacked-out trim and wheels, too.

dmm_backs

This 6-speed is a riot to drive.  I took it around the block and I can only describe it as an “evil” version of my own car.  Lower, more aggressive sounding, and better handling.

tyson_jeff_dmm

Thanks, Jeff, for letting me stay at your place!

jeff_tyson

Check out that custom engine bay work.  Attention to detail is the name of the game here.

9th Annual National Acura Legend Meet Pictures

Posted in Legend, NALM, Road Trip on August 24, 2013 by tysonhugie

Welcome to Maggie Valley, North Carolina.  This small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains has been overtaken by a swarm of Acura Legends for a multi-day event.  It’s heaven on earth for a Legend fanatic like me!

I just had to share our awesome ‘backyard’ from here at the Creekside Lodge.  We’ve got a great little river out there and we’re about to dine on BBQ dinner in just a few minutes.

Alex installed my NALM 2013 sticker.

I’ll proudly sport that!

Kevin calls his car the Old War Horse.  It’s an L model but with some tasteful GS trim level upgrades.

Finally, Alex took my coupe for a spin.  He knows how to build a fast Legend.  It was an honor to have him behind the wheel.

Meanwhile, I had the chance to also wander around and check out the insides & outsides of some of the other Legends in attendance.  Many of the cars were ultra clean!

This GS 6-speed was particularly nice.  It has the exact same license plate as my Legend does, just from another state!  (North Carolina)

Chaka’s highly modified Legend went up for a test, too.

Here’s the man behind that build.  He was proudly wearing a “Congratulations, Tyson – 500,000 Miles” T-shirt.  Thanks for your support, Chaka!

Mike from Georgia came out in his amazing Canterbury Green sedan with custom red/clear/red taillights.

tyson_mike

This is Jon.  I drove his Legend this morning and it’s a monster.  Dual exhaust, fully modified, and it rides like it’s on rails.  An awesome car that represents many hours of time & effort invested.

Ryan’s car only has 91,000 miles on it.  I drove it this afternoon and it handled like a new car.

We had lunch at Zaxby’s for some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever eaten!  They have a warning sign in there “WARNING:  ZAXBY’S CAN BECOME ADDICTIVE.”  They weren’t kidding!

This Legend came all the way from Connecticut.  It started out as a stock 1991 LS but now has a 3.5 motor from an Acura RL and a 6-speed manual transmission.

I made it!  Today was a light day in comparison to yesterday’s marathon:  Just 5 hours, 45 minutes and only 400 miles to my final destination in Maggie Valley for the 9th Annual National Acura Legend Meet.

The Legend was rip-raring to go as I departed from Jackson, Tennessee this morning.

motel

Fuel at Sunoco somewhere in Tennessee.  Like I told my friend Chris, “I don’t even wait for the receipt to print.  I hop back in the driver seat and head out!”

sunoco

It felt great to finally see that blue marker closing in on its destination.

closer

Asheville!  The finish line is now in sight.

asheville

Lots of bridges today – a rare sight for an Arizonan like me.  “River” to me frequently just means the bridge is crossing a dry river bed.

bridge

Torrential rain came down between Knoxville and the North Carolina state line.  Traffic slowed to a crawl and even with the wipers on the highest setting, they couldn’t keep up.  Once the clouds parted it was a beautiful canyon.

nc_welcome

Two tunnels on I-40 eastbound.

tunnel2

If I had an aftermarket exhaust system, this is where I’d let it roar.

tunnel

It felt weird using a green-handled nozzle at the gas station and I had to remind myself, “THIS IS NOT DIESEL.”  I double-checked the button before I selected the 93 octane, anyway.

gas

Quick oil level check – all systems good!  I’m running Valvoline 5W30 oil.

oil_check

And finally, I arrived at the Maggie Valley Creekside Lodge and received a warm welcome from all those who had already arrived.

prelude_legend

These guys gave me a little grief for my aftermarket audio system and some missing hardware under the hood (thanks to those deer collision incidents in 2007) but overall they were impressed with how things looked!

group_with_coupe

One lonely Prelude in the background – my friend Chris drove down from Maryland in his 1991 Si 4WS 5-speed.  It’s a beauty with around 220,000 on the odometer.  The Legend in the foreground belongs to Alex.

Nice looking lineup!

I’m a thousand miles from nowhere
Time don’t matter to me
‘Cause I’m a thousand miles from nowhere
And there’s no place I want to be

My friend Chris told me this could be my theme song for my trip to North Carolina, and I couldn’t agree more.  Thanks Mr. Dwight Yoakam for your talent.

As long as I’ve got a full tank of gas, good tunes, and the open road, it doesn’t matter where I’m going. And today, I saw over 1,000 miles of America from behind the wheel of my 1994 Acura Legend coupe.  Here’s how my day played out.

For a couple of years now I’ve been cautioned about a leaky power steering pump on the Legend.  It’s the original, so understandably getting a little tired.  It was resealed 11,000 miles ago but still loses fluid.  I started the morning off with a whining power steering pump.  When I checked the fluid level, it was well below MIN so I topped it off and grabbed a couple extra bottles of fluid for good measure.

ps_fluid

Nothing like plugging in a destination address and seeing that it’s 14 hours, 10 minutes away.  I knew it was time to get comfortable in the driver seat so I slipped off my shoes and queued up the roadtrip playlist.

1038_eta

Sunrise in New Mexico was worthy of a photo op.  Mr. Sunshine woke up after I’d already been on the road awhile, and he went to bed at least a few hours before I did.  I put in overtime today.

sunrise

Cheesy pics are the result of staring at the road for too many hours at a time.

tyson_bored

First stop was the Amarillo, Texas:  home to Cadillac Ranch.  It’s also home to a steakhouse where if you can finish a 72-ouncer, it’s free.  I didn’t quite have the appetite.  Instead, I went with a yogurt and some oatmeal while the Legend enjoyed the company of this stately looking 1980’s Mercury Grand Marquis.

amarillo_grand_marquis

Shamrock, Texas might as well be called Radiator Springs, because it feels exactly like a trip into the cartoon world of the Pixar movie “Cars.”  I especially enjoyed this old Conoco station which now houses the visitor center.

acura_legend_coupe_shamrock_texas

I wonder what the price of fuel was the last time this thing was in use.

conoco

A nice biker couple took my pic to commemorate the visit.

tyson_in_shamrock_tx

Peek-a-boo.

shamrock_legend

I’d worked up some munchies by the time I got into Oklahoma, so I stopped just west of Oklahoma City for a bite to eat.  The town of Yukon is exceptionally proud of the fact that Garth Brooks is from there.

yukon_oklahoma

In fact, I dined at a restaurant on Garth Brooks Boulevard.

lunch_el_reno

I wasn’t kidding!  Check out the map.

garth_brooks_rd

The Legend was a little thirsty, too, so I went ahead filled up that 18-gallon tank once more.

domino_station

Eastward ho.

ama

Up to this point on this trip, I have not seen any other Acura Legends on the road.  This is not surprising; the car has now been out of production for over 18 years.  Still, I keep hoping and wishing for the chance to give a head-nod or thumbs-up to a fellow driver if & when I see one.

okc_signs

I found my way through Oklahoma and then crossed that state off my to-see list for the day.  Next up:  Arkansas.

arkansas_sign

I treat a long-distance drive just like I do a long-distance run:  by breaking it up into chunks.  I’ve found that based on hundreds of thousands of miles of experience, I’m most comfortable stretching my legs every 200-250 miles.  When I fuel up the car, I look at my 2014 Rand McNally atlas (thanks grandma!) and see about where I’ll be when I’ve driven that far.  This way, I always have something to look forward to.

tyson_truck

I much prefer easy-on, easy-off gas stations rather than ones that make me sit through multiple traffic lights, and this one at exit 57 fit the bill nicely.  Best of all, they had 93 octane.  It ran $4.09 per gallon.  A sign at the entrance to the station said,  “Premium is Ethanol-Free.”  Good to know!

93_octane

Holy caffeine alert.  24 ounce Mountain Dew cans exist?   I wouldn’t dare.  A bottle of Tampico orange juice and some beef jerky fit the bill, though.

mtn_dew

Rollin, rollin, rollin.

524k

Much of Arkansas looks about like this.  Tree-lined interstate with little traffic.  Speed limits are 70 mph (65 mph for trucks) and I kept the cruise control at 73-75 consistently.

i40

Sunrise in New Mexico, sunset in Arkansas.  Just another day in Drive to Five land.

sunset

And finally, tonight’s destination in Jackson.  Just a little blip in the radar off I-40 east of Memphis, but it’s a cozy bed after a long day on the road.  Thanks again for coming along for the ride!

NALM Day 1: Moriarty, New Mexico

Daily Distance:  462 Miles

And we’re off!

It’s been 14 months since I “daily” drove my Acura Legend; I spend most of my seat-time in my 2013 Acura ILX and I’ve had boat-loads of fun with it.  But for this particular occasion, the 9th annual National Acura Legend Meet felt like a fitting opportunity to blow the cobwebs off that old tried & true ride for an old fashioned cross-country trip.

Loaded up and ready to hit the road, I went to work for 1/2 day.

morning

I’ve often described that it feels a bit like putting on an old shoe to get back into my Legend.  It just “fits.”  Perhaps that’s because over the course of the 428,000 miles I put on it over the last 10 years, the driver seat is molded to my shape of my buttocks?

As I was giving my colleague at work the low-down on what to expect while I’m out of the office, our conversation on the phone went something like this:

  • Melissa:  So where is it you’re off to this time?
  • Tyson:  I’ll be in North Carolina on Friday night & Saturday night
  • Melissa:  Oh my gosh.  You’re… flying… this time, right?
  • Tyson (grins):  Umm, nope.

At this point even though she was in Rhode Island and I was in Arizona, I could picture her eye-rolling gesture just as clearly as if she’d been standing in front of me.  Some people will simply never understand the beauty of a good road trip.  Here was my ‘beginning’ mileage for this trip.

beginning

The first few hours of my drive were on the scenic back-roads of northeastern Arizona, including this piece of the “Beeline” Highway 87.

87

Summer thunderstorms, though, would soon put a damper on those perfect roads.  Luckily, the Legend’s Michelin Primary tires are fresh.  They handle the wet better than any other tire I’ve tried.

payson_rain

Once I arrived in Holbrook, I finally got on a “real” interstate.  I would be spending the next 1,300+ miles on this same interstate.  Guess it was time to start getting cozy in that driver seat.

abq_sign

Here’s a welcome change from the high-revving 2.4 liter ILX 4 cylinder.  The Legend, by contrast, lugs around at 2,500 RPM, barely giving the 3.2 V6 a workout.  Consequently, it’s a quieter ride.

cruising

Interstate 40 traffic was minimal as I made my way toward the AZ/NM state line.

mirror

And the clouds parted just in time for me to catch some sweet patterns in the sky.

rain

Speaking of colors, how about a bright orange Check Engine Light in my face?  This popped on at 522,989 miles.  I’m 99% sure it’s related to a recurring fault with the EGR (Engine Gas Recirculation) system.  Performance was unaffected and I’ve seen this one before.  It seemed odd that it would show up randomly over 200 miles into my drive.

cel

Welcome to New Mexico!  I’ve stopped here too many times already, so it was a fly-by this time.

nm_welcome

Dine & dash at the Arby’s in Gallup, New Mexico.  I’m glad to have that half-bra to save my fresh front end paintjob from getting needless rock chips.  I probably should’ve taken the time to install the bottom piece, too.

gallup_legend

Not much to see here!

gallup

After my dinner stop, that pesky CEL never came back on.  Soon I was seeing Albuquerque city lights!  That little red dot toward the top right of the picture — that’s the moon, believe it or not!

abq2

Just about 30 miles from ABQ I rolled into the small town of Moriarty.  I fueled up the Legend and now it’s time to relax for the night.  I paid $3.69 for 90 octane – which apparently is considered “premium” fuel here.

90_octane

Checking in and checking out for the night!

motel_arrival

The one thing that’s really killing me this trip is the “loss” of time due to the crossing of time zones.  Since Arizona is on Pacific time (we don’t observe Daylight Savings) and North Carolina is on Eastern, I’m losing a full 3 hours.  I guess it’ll make the return trip feel like a breeze since I’ll be gaining them back and chasing the sun.

I’m going to make an attempt at doing as much of this tomorrow as I can.  Come along for the ride.

Reader’s Ride: Mirel’s 1993 Legend LS Coupe 6-Speed; NALM Travels

Posted in Legend, Reader's Ride on August 20, 2013 by tysonhugie

Odometer (ILX):  52,517

52517

I’ll never forget the day I met Mirel.  It was a beautiful sunny springtime Phoenix day in 2006 and I was cruising eastbound on Dunlap Avenue in Glendale, Arizona in my 1994 Legend coupe.

To my delight, I saw approaching in my sideview mirror what appeared to be another Legend.  Its red paint was eye-catching.  I slowed down just slightly so that the Legend following me would get closer and pass by on my left.  Sure enough, up drove a super-clean Milano Red 1994 L coupe with Mirel at the wheel.  We stared at each others’ cars as we rolled alongside each other, and then I made the gesture of “pull over!”  He knew what I meant.

Soon we were standing next to our cars in a parking lot and exchanging contact information while talking about Legends.  Since that day, Mirel and I have remained good friends.  His Acura ownership experience began long before he bought that red coupe.  He previously owned this green Integra.

mirelintegra

And also this Rosewood Brown Metallic 1991 Legend L coupe.

mireloldcoupe

Below are pictures from a very small (3-car) Legend meet in Phoenix on March 1, 2006.  My Legend had about 210,000 miles on it at the time.  I can’t remember exactly where this summit is but I need to get back up there for another round of pictures soon.

mirel_with_red_coupe

The Sherwood Green 1994 L sedan in the middle belonged to our friend Chris.

meet1

We got creative with the pictures and climbed up on the hillside for a new angle on things.

meet2

Hoods down, now.

meet3

Mirel’s Milano Red coupe was an automatic.  Those chrome wheels gave it plenty of bling.

meet4

At that time, my Legend was wearing 17″ wheels from a 2004 Acura TL.  I also had a McCulloch 6000K HID headlight kit and some European Domestic Market (EDM) clear corner lenses installed.

meet5

Mirel’s red coupe was sold not long after that first meet-up, when he picked up a super clean 1994 LS 6-speed in a highly sought-after black on black color combination.  Soon, however, his young family outgrew the car and it was also sold two years ago.  As of last week, Mirel is now back in the Legend game.

mirel_legend_with_ilx

This is his 1993 LS coupe 6-speed in Granada Black Pearl with Ivory Interior.  The car has only 110,000 miles on it.  That comes out to just 5,500 per year over its 20 years of life.  Low mileage!  Mirel found the car listed on Tucson craigslist and called the seller right away.  That night, he made the purchase and drove it home to Phoenix (about a 125-mile trip).  He called me from the road and I could sense his excitement.

mirel_with_legend

This car is a rarity with that kind of mileage.  He gave me the key and I drove it around the block.  It sure does ride nice and smooth.  All the gears were flawless, the clutch had plenty of life, and the suspension & steering were tight.

mirel_coupe_odometer

Aside from a few tears on the driver’s seat, the rest of the interior is in excellent shape, including the factory floormats.  I couldn’t find any cracks in the clearcoat on his burlwood center console trim.

mirel_coupe_interior

The Type II engine is barely broken in.

mirel_coupe_engine

A few cosmetic flaws, including the clearcoat deterioration on the tops of the roof & trunk lid, will soon be addressed.  For now, Mirel is just thrilled to be back behind the wheel of a Legend.

mirel_coupe_right_rear

Congratulations my friend!  And welcome back to the family.

Here’s what my next 6 days will look like!  I’m traveling to the 9th Annual National Acura Legend Meet (NALM) in Asheville, North Carolina in my 1994 Legend coupe.  I know my car is ready for these 3,922 miles.  But am I?

Stay tuned as I’ll make every attempt to post each night at my planned stops along the way (flags on the map).  Northern leg is the outbound; southern leg is the return.

Legend Tour: Old Town Scottsdale

I’m one of 221,789 people who call Scottsdale, Arizona home.  The city is located in the Phoenix metropolitan area and was incorporated in July 1951.  It probably seems to many of my readers that I must not like where I live, since on any given weekend I’m usually on an Acura trip far from home. Truth is, though, that I love it here.

scottsdale_map

On Sunday, I took a morning cruise in the Legend to downtown Scottsdale which is only about 10 minutes from my home.  “Old Town,” as it’s called, refers to an area at the intersections of Scottsdale Rd & Indian School Rd that is the hub of area night life, commerce, and culture.  I had brunch with my friend Kati at RnR Restaurant & Bar.

kati_tyson_at_rnr

Fueled by a delicious omelet & a tall glass of orange juice, I took the Legend around to see a couple of the sights.

old_town_sign

The city’s seal is a mounted cowboy, and there are signs of him standing on various corners in the Old Town area.

acura_legend_old_town_scottsdale

Some fun facts about Scottsdale, thanks to Wikipedia:

Scottsdale in 1993 was named the “Most Livable City”, in the United States by the United States Conference of Mayors. This title is notoriously lampooned across the state because of the high cost of living in Scottsdale. It is continually ranked as one of the premier golf and resort destinations in the world, with a sizable portion of tax revenue being derived from tourism. It is also home to the Phoenix Open Golf Tournament and the Barrett Jackson car auction held at WestWorld.

At 4005 North Scottsdale Road lies Sugar Bowl – the best place in town for foods, ice cream, pastries, and candy.  It’s been around since 1958.

acura_legend_sugar_bowl_scottsdale

On May 29th, I had dessert there with my friend Kevin and I confirm that the hot fudge sundae cannot be beat.

kevin_eating_sundae

Sugar Bowl’s claim to fame is that it has been featured in many of the “Family Circus” cartoons by artist Bil Keane.  Bil lived in Paradise Valley, Arizona and was one of Sugar Bowl’s famous customers.

sugar_bowl_menu

Bil even wrote a note to the owner of the restaurant on this cartoon that’s hanging at the entrance.  Bil passed away in November 2011 but his son Jeff continues to draw the Family Circus cartoons.

bil_keane_note

Old Town is a fun place to walk around and check out the mom & pop shops.

acura_legend_old_town_

Just a few blocks away lies the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall, one of the 20 largest shopping malls in the country.

The “Old West Meets the New West.”  Below, the Adobe Mission lies at the intersection of Main Street & Brown Avenue.  It was built from 1931-33 and restored in 2000.

When I moved to Arizona nearly 8 years ago, the Acura Legend enthusiast network was one of my means for meeting new friends in the area.  Chuck was one of those first people who I connected with.

In February 2007, I owned a 207,000 mile white Acura Legend GS 6-speed manual.  At the time, Chuck had two beautiful Sirius White Pearl 1993 Legends.  We decided to have a “Pearl White Block Party” and I shared a few pictures on the Legend forums at the time.

Chuck’s sedan had 61,000 miles on it.  His 6-speed coupe had 17,000 miles on it.

Today, Chuck’s sedan is gone but the coupe lives on, now with just under 31,000 miles on the odometer.

Purchased in December 2004 with 16,000 miles on it, this car sees the road only when it’s time to head to the golf course (once a week or so).

The license plate “AZLEGND” is synonymous with Chuck’s username on the Acura Legend forums.

The wheels on the coupe are 16″ aftermarket wheels that were once on Chuck’s sedan.

Underneath those sheepskin seat covers, the condition of the leather is near-new.  In fact, the whole car smells fresh.

Here’s a start-up and very short drive video of this amazingly well-kept Legend.

Readers with a keen eye may have noticed a first generation Legend in Chuck’s garage.  There’s a story behind that one.

In March 2010, I went to take a look at a rare custom Legend convertible about 75 miles from my home.  I posted a pretty detailed write-up to the forums at the time, but I didn’t end up pulling the trigger on it for myself.  The car was a 1988 L model automatic.  It had 87,000 miles on its 2.7 liter engine at the time I took it for a spin.

Over 3 years later, the car popped back up on Phoenix craigslist a couple of weeks ago, and Chuck had the honor of scooping this beauty up.  It became the 5th Acura Legend that he’s owned.  Now at 111,000 miles, the car is in worthy Legend enthusiast hands and I’m excited to see what he’ll do with it.  I can’t think of a better ride for enjoying the perfect Phoenix winters with the top down.

legend_coupes_1

Supposedly this convertible was one of only 12 conversions completed at the time.  It’s nicely put together.

Can’t wait to take this one for a spin!  Thanks, Chuck, for your friendship and for letting me borrow some tools from time to time!

I happened to be driving my Legend GS sedan when I stopped by on Tuesday evening.

This old girl is sitting at about 144,200 miles currently.  It resides in storage but comes out to play about once every 2-3 weeks.

My great-grandpa Hansen opened the very first automotive service station in northern Utah’s Cache Valley in 1923.  The automotive industry has always been in my blood.  At one time Grandpa Hansen sold Texaco oils.

Later it was Parco.

And at some point, his station sold Chevron brand.

Great-Grandpa Hansen is pictured here with my grandmother as a baby in January 1931.

Grandpa ran the station until Labor Day 1967 when he retired and sold the building.  His 40+ years in the fuel service industry ingrained in my family a love for the automobile.  The station is seen in the background here, with my uncle Jeff’s 1955 Chevy in the foreground.

This is a fun movie ticket that we have as a reminder of what it was like to spend $0.15 to go to a movie.  Notice the expiration date was March 15th, 1932.  I would’ve loved to explore his service station.  It’s since been bulldozed.

Eighty years later, I’m still supporting the motor oil industry but as a consumer rather than a vendor.

legend_front_left

The oil and filter in this car have been changed 161 times.

legend_right_rear

One of the most common questions I get from readers who learn of my mileage on the Legend is, “What oil are you running in that thing?”  The answer may surprise many.  The Legend runs on conventional 5W30 oil and always has.  I’ve never used any motor oil additives, never used Seafoam.  The only “treatment” of any sort that the car has received is an occasional bottle of Chevron Techron in the fuel tank.  Now, this begs the next question:  “How often do you have the oil changed?”

The short answer:  FREQUENTLY.

oil_changes_snapshot_acura_legend

As seen in my maintenance spreadsheet, I’ve stuck with a 3,000 mile interval for my entire ownership of the car, even if it means having the oil changed mid-cross-country-trip.  For this reason, my car’s been in dealership service bays as far east as Princeton, New Jersey, as far west as Fife, Washington, as far south as Austin, Texas, and as far north as Fairbanks, Alaska.  I’ve got every corner of the country pretty much covered.

The Owner’s Manual to my Legend calls for an oil & filter change every 7,500 miles.  There’s an accompanying sticker on the airbox in the engine bay that says the same thing.

7500_mile_oil_change

However, a footnote to the Maintenance Schedule section on page 144 also indicates that “severe driving conditions” warrant a more frequent change.

legend_maintenance_schedule

Severe driving conditions are defined as follows:

  • Driving less than 5 miles per trip
  • Driving on rough, muddy, or de-iced roads
  • Driving in extremely dusty conditions
  • Extensive idling or driving long periods at slow speeds
  • Towing a trailer

In such cases, the oil change interval is shortened to every 3,750 miles.  I consider Arizona driving conditions about as severe as they get.

My other Legend, the 4-door sedan GS 6-speed, is in storage with the battery disconnected.  It gets driven every 2-3 weeks for varying distances.  However, the mileage takes awhile to accumulate.  Case in point:  Between October 17, 2012 and April 15, 2013 (6 months’ time), the car was only driven 278 miles.  But, I still have the oil changed every 6 months regardless of mileage driven.

legend_sedan_in_storage

My ILX, at 19 model years newer than the Legend, asks for a vastly different approach to oil maintenance.  The car comes with 0W20 oil.  Is this oil conventional or synthetic?  It depends on who you’re asking.  I’ve googled this endlessly and seen various types of responses.  One commenter even stated that he knew of three distinct versions of Honda 0W20 oil!

As for the oil change interval, the ILX owner’s manual throws out the notion of mileage-based changes entirely.  Instead, the driver is asked to schedule maintenance based on a computer readout in the middle of the instrument cluster called the “Maintenance Minder.”  I can get to my Maintenance Minder by toggling through a few other screens (mpg, estimated range, etc).  It reads out as a percentage. On a fresh oil change, it’s reset to 100% oil life remaining.

ilx_oil_change_manual_page_1

When I got the ILX, I was told, “Schedule your oil change when it hits 15%.”  Well, I had gotten to 5,000 miles and it still said 50%!  As someone who has clung to 3,000 mile changes my whole life, the idea of continuing to push the car to 2 or 3 times that mileage seemed absurd.  I went ahead and had it changed at 5,000 miles, and I’ve stuck to that interval ever since.  Is it wasteful and unnecessary?  Probably.  But it works for me.  I can easily keep track of when the car’s due for service.  And I don’t mind enjoying the Customer Lounge amenities at my local dealership frequently.

ilx_oil_change_manual_page_2

We’ll see if my technique gets me to 500,000 miles in the ILX or not.  I’m curious what my readers think.  Weigh in on the comments section:  When do you get your oil changed?

On Monday night, I met up with my friend Armando who has a super clean pearl white 1992 Subaru SVX.  This is Armando’s second SVX.  You all met the first one back in May.  It was good to catch up with him.

svx_ilx

I’ve always thought this was a cool design, especially in the black and white two-tone like Armando has.

tyson_with_svx

At around 180,000 miles, he’s just getting broken in.

I wanted to share another classic car of yesteryear with the blog today as well.  This is my step-dad’s 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook Sedan.  He’s owned it for over 35 years.

plymouth2

This beauty has a 3-speed manual transmission on the steering column.  I’m going to take it for a spin when I visit northern Utah later this week.  The ILX and I are off to Logan, Utah to escape the Phoenix heat for a few days.

plymouth1

This Plymouth is up for grabs for $3,800 if anyone out there is interested.

plymouth_interior

In closing, I visited a friend who had this sitting on her bookshelf.

drive_it_forever_book

Published in 1983, I wonder how many of the techniques in there would still apply for today’s vehicles?

I’ll have to order myself a copy and read up!  Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Welcome summer!  Love those weekend highs.

Today, the Legend coupe went in for an oil change and I added yet another page to the 2-volume set of maintenance records that date back to 1994.

acura_legend_oil_change_receipt

The oil had last been changed on February 14th at 519,701 miles, so it’s definitely taken me awhile to rack up nearly 3,000 miles on this one.  For $43.78, I was out the door with fresh 5W30 oil and a new filter.  It’s worth noting here that I’ve never topped off the car’s oil level between changes.  I’ve checked the oil level mid-change and it’s always been within allowable limits.

legend_in_service_drive

The mechanic did make mention on my paperwork of some leaks that I may need to address before my big trip to North Carolina later this year for the National Acura Legend Meet.  Namely, the power steering rack and the differential (both of which are original to the car).

Acura of Tempe, Arizona must be feeling patriotic, because they had this Vortex Blue TSX Sedan and Milano Red TSX Wagon parked at the entrance to the service department.  They just need to park a white one in between them!

blue_red_tsx

While waiting for the service, I had time to check out the all-new MDX that went on sale recently.  Those signature “Jewel Eye” headlights that we’ve also seen in the new RLX are appearing here as well.

mdx_headlight

The MDX is powered by a 290-horsepower 3.5 liter V6 that delivers impressive fuel economy at 28 mpg highway.  That seems really great for an SUV of this size and weight.  Remember, this thing has a third seating row for passengers and can accommodate 7 comfortably!

2014_mdx

The interior appears to be nicely appointed, too.

2014_mdx_interior

Apparently, this latest Acura MDX – when equipped with some of the higher end Technology or Advance packages – can be outfitted in Forest Mist Metallic with Eucalyptus (green!) leather interior.

green_on_green_mdx

I haven’t seen a green-on-green car since my dad’s 1972 Ford Gran Torino Sport! (pictured in the background here with my younger brother who is now 25):

Next week’s Independence Day holiday will mean extensive travels for the ILX, but it won’t be going too far this weekend.

legend_dash_ilx

I found a lot of random stuff to share over the last several days.  First, some NEW Acura news.

2015 Acura TLX Spy Photos

Brenda Priddy Spy Photography caught the 2015 Acura TLX out for hot-weather testing in Death Valley.  This car will reportedly be the successor to the current TL.  Temple of VTEC has a photo album here.

Can’t wait to see more about this exciting new model.

Drive to Five New Member

My friend William has a 2000 Honda Accord sedan 5-speed that he and his family have driven since brand new.  It rolled 500,000 miles a few days ago outside the base where he’s stationed in Georgia.

william_accord_mileage

Congrats, William!

And my friend Spencer also hit a milestone in his Cashmere Silver Metallic 1994 Legend LS coupe 6-speed.  Notice how he managed to get 234,567.0 on the odometer with 901.2 on the trip meter.  Clever thinking (and some pre-planning) there!

Spencer’s car looks great for its age and mileage!

Curbside Classic Feature

Check out this write-up by Brendan Saur of Curbside Classics which is a nice discussion about the evolution of the Legend and its successors.  Brendan did a great job of capturing the highlights of Acura’s flagship, from the original 1986 Legend to today’s 2014 RLX.

Blasts from the Past

If you’ve got 7 minutes to spare, this YouTube video is a fun 1995 comparo between the then-new 1995 Nissan Maxima and some other luxury competitors, including the Acura Legend LS.

Link here since it won’t let me embed.

My favorite comment was during the acceleration test when the narrator claimed the Maxima had better performance because it “powered ahead of the Lexus, the Mercedes, and the Legend.”  Notice that he didn’t say “the Acura.”  This exact point is why Acura abandoned the Legend nameplate in favor of the alphanumeric “RL” name.  People were associating the car with the name “Legend” more than with the name Acura.

Look how they throw the car around those cones at 3:24!

legend_evasive_action

And yet another throwback:  This is a scan from my high school yearbook (year 2000).  Even back then, I took a great deal of pride in my car, a 1989 Honda Prelude Si.  In fact, I made sure to get the exact same parking space every day – right along the street where I could keep a close eye on the car AND have it be protected from receiving dents from careless fellow classmates.

tyson_yearbook_scan

Around that same timeframe was when my family had a 1993 Legend L sedan.  I must’ve been keeping an eye on classifieds because for some reason I clipped these two out of the Pioneer Shopper that came out every Thursday!

93_legend_ad

It seems odd to see such a pricetag on a 1993.  It’s also hard to believe these clippings are from 15 years ago.

93_Legend_Ad_2

Sure wish I could get $17,500 out of my 1994 today!
