Odometer:  495,700

Blog reader “Scott” in Dallas, Texas today said he thought it’d be cool if I shared some of my odometer pictures from over the years.  The total photograph count of Legend pics in my archive is well into the thousands, and odometer shots are a good chunk of those.  In addition to the standard 1, 2, 3, 400,000 shots which I shared in this blog’s first post here…

https://drivetofive.wordpress.com/2011/03/22/ready-set-go/

…. here are a few of the other memorable occasions:

123,456.7

234,567.8

345,678.9

456,789.0

Below are a few that I can actually peg dates & locations to.

111,111.1.  Yes, at 111 mph. October, 2003, somewhere between Las Vegas and Primm, Nevada on I-15.   The road was closed to the public at the time, obviously.

222,222.2.  May, 2006.  Alaska Highway, southbound, in the Yukon Territory, Canada, coming home from Fairbanks, Alaska.  My dad was actually driving at the time.

333,333.3.  July, 2008.  Interstate 40, westbound, near Memphis Tennessee – coming home from that year’s annual National Acura Legend Meet (NALM) in Chattanooga.

444,444.4.  And:  BONUS points for also getting 444.4 on the trip meter!  Yes, this one took some pre-planning.  October, 2010.  Valencia Rd, west of Tucson, Arizona.

Tonight, I dropped off the Legend with my friend & side mechanic Wes to have him to do an assessment on the brake rotors and upper control arms in the front.  We’ll see what the verdict is.  I caught a cab ride home from a cheery guy in a lime green Prius (with 170k on it – yes I had to ask him).  He’d seen that I was dropping off my car for maintenance and asked what I was having done to it.  I told him I had 495,000 miles on it and he exclaimed, “That’s not a car, that’s a SUPERcar!”

I totally agreed with him.

Top 5 Countdown

Odometer: 495,645

Watching so many numbers roll by on the odometer this weekend made me a little dizzy!  It ended up being about a 1,700 mile, 3-day weekend.  Lots of seat time in the Legend but for good reason.  The car motored down the road like a vehicle half its age… er… mileage!  Never a moment of hesitation.  It’s almost like a puppy wagging its tail at any chance to eat up the open road.

We’ve now (I say “WE” because with each roadtrip, I take my blog readers along with me for the ride!) entered into the last 5,000 miles of my journey to 500,000 miles.  The 495,000 roll-over happened on Interstate 15 just south of Nephi, Utah at the very location pictured here.  Not much to look at!  The speed limit is 80 through here, so at least that helps move things along.

Just south of St. George, the interstate slices through the northwestern corner of Arizona on a stretch of road called the “Virgin River Gorge.”  This is an exceptionally fun road to travel if you’ve got a car capable of cornering.  The gorge was completed in 1973 at a cost of about $10 million per mile.  To this day it is one of the most expensive sections of interstate in the country because the Virgin River had to be rechanneled 12 times in order to accommodate it.  The views are incredible, especially at dusk.

I rolled back into Scottsdale in time this evening to take care of some chores and recharge for the work week ahead.

I thought it would be worthwhile to spotlight my mom right here – she’s the main reason I took this weekend’s trip.  I got a chance to see her new home in northern Utah (pictured).

She and my dad are also to thank (or blame?) for my Acura obsession.  It all started when she bought this 1990 Acura Integra GS back in 1996.  I didn’t even have a license yet but I still appreciated its nimble demeanor and sporty styling.

Then she picked up a 1993 Legend L sedan.  This is the car that introduced me to the Legend name and led me down the road of ownership myself eventually.  The following picture from 1998 was when mom’s teenage sons had taken it upon themselves to deck out her car in 18″ chrome wheels.  Bling bling!

The next Acura was a pearl white 1997 3.2 TL.  All in all, a very fine ride!  I especially loved the frameless windows on this one.

After that, it was time for another flagship sedan, whose name had changed to the RL from Legend.  Mom bought this 2000 3.5 RL with only 22,000 miles on the odometer from the original owner in San Francisco.  The black/black color combination made for a hot ride during the summer, but it looked stunning from just about any angle.  I took this picture in Snow Canyon State Park just outside St. George, Utah.

Later on, mom went back to another Legend – this time a milano red 1994 LS coupe.  Attention grabber!

Safe to say we’ve had such a great experience with Acura that we keep coming back for more.

So, here we go with just 4,355 miles remaining until the Legend gets even more Legendary.  Thanks for joining me for the ride!

I’ve Got Competition

Odometer: 487,035

This morning, I relaxed in the Customer Lounge at Acura of Tempe and enjoyed the amenities while the Legend received an oil change – 3000 miles, yet only 8 days since the last one.  Everything looked great, they said.  I’ve never deviated from standard 5W30 oil throughout my maintenance history on this car.  I declined the wash, as I always do, because I planned to spend a little bit of time doing a hand-wash & wax with my preferred detailing arsenal of Meguiar’s products later in the day.

My friend Chris works at Tempe Honda and had told me about a high-mileage Honda Accord on display that had recently been taken on trade there.  I stopped by to take a look.  The 1990-1993 Accords are some of the most indestructible vehicles on the road.  Another Accord of this vintage is quickly approaching the 1,000,000 mile mark. See below for article link on “Million Mile Joe.”

http://news.discovery.com/autos/honda-owner-nears-one-million-miles-110617.html

This particular 5-speed LX sedan was in pretty remarkable shape, inside & out, and has just over 429,000 miles on the odometer.  The salesperson I spoke with, Daniel, was surprised to learn that I had this Accord beat in the mileage realm.

As planned, I spent some time this afternoon in car-detail mode and applied a coat of Meguiar’s carnauba wax by hand to the coupe.  The results are always rewarding.

Mechanically, things are reportedly good to go for the next 3,000 miles per Acura of Tempe but I’m still going to have those control arms in the rear checked out in greater detail.  I’m enjoying a (somewhat) relaxing weekend at home after having been on the road for so long.

Back from the Moon

Posted in Legend, Milestones on June 12, 2011 by tysonhugie

Odometer:  477,877

Today the mighty Legend coupe completed its journey to the moon and back.  The average distance to the moon is 238,857 miles, so as of 477,714 at around 7:00 p.m. this evening on Interstate 10 eastbound near Quartzsite, Arizona, the mission was completed.  Step aside, space shuttle!  If I’d been getting 26 mpg (hwy rating per the window sticker) for the entire 477,000 miles, the car would have burned just over 18,300 gallons of fuel during this excursion.  Reference on lunar distance:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_distance_%28astronomy%29

If I could have placed an ACURA flag on the surface of the moon while I was there, I would have done so.

Today’s adventure took my friend Matt and me to the site of the Chrysler-owned “Arizona Proving Ground” in the town of Yucca, which is literally nothing more than a few ghost town-worthy buildings, a post office, a bar, and the expansive proving ground facility which is both heavily gated and closely monitored.  In stopping at the entrance to the grounds just off Interstate 40 for a picture, a voice came on a loudspeaker, “Can I help you?”  I responded (aimlessly looking around for where the voice had come from) that we were only there for a picture and would be on our way.

Interestingly enough, I was watching an old “MT TV” (Motor Trend) spot from 1998 and noticed that this same facility, once Ford-owned, was used in a high speed shootout and appears in a YouTube clip online.

I (carefully) snagged an odometer shot on I-10 as we neared the Phoenix metro area once again this evening.

Lucky sevens!

Only issue we had with the car today was an intermittent problem I’ve noticed with the climate control system.  Every once in awhile, I’ll start the car and hit the AUTO for the A/C to kick on and not get any fan speed – even when I manually override the system and set it to “high.”  This issue happened once today when we drove a good 5-8 minutes before we got any airflow from the vents.  Otherwise it was a trouble free drive.

Top 25 Countdown

Odometer:  475,007

Today on my way home from work I rolled past 475,000 which officially puts me in top 25 mode.  It’s all downhill from here!  The coupe continues to faithfully get me to work and back each day and I look forward to where my weekend travels will take me in the next 25,000.  Today’s achievement happened on Arizona Highway 87 southbound, between Fountain Hills and Mesa, Arizona.

Here’s a picture of the scenery where it took place.

Here is a video of the turn-over.  Poor quality due to the sun’s position and the fact that I was trying to drive at the same time.

Nothing new to report at this time, mechanically.  No news is good news, as they say.  Next oil change is due at 476,000.

Here are a couple of pictures from last weekend after I gave the car a much needed quick bath.  From a few feet away it still looks pretty dang good.  It isn’t until you get up close that you notice the peppered front end, missing clear coat on the trunk, misaligned bumper, and a few inevitable door dings (though, like most any car lover, I am an extremely careful parker!).

When I washed the car I also took note that I’ve been wearing a hole in the floor mat with the heel of my left shoe!  Good thing I have a new-in-the-box set of floor mats for any special occasions still.  And notice I’m rocking “dealership” adhesive plastic on the entry sills.  Love it!  I bought a 200′ roll of this stuff on Ebay years ago and may never use it all.  Comes in especially handy during the (short) Arizona rainy season.

Finally I thought it would be interesting to post a chart I threw together which shows the Legend’s mileage accumulation over its lifetime.  Since I have service records from its birth, it’s easy to plot everything out for a visual.   The line very visibly steepens when my ownership takes place about halfway through.  And my rate is pretty consistent too.  There are only two blips on the radar:  a section in winter 2004/05 when I drove a “winter beater” for a month or two during my college degree in northern Utah at USU, and a section in mid-late 2007 when the car spent a month or so for repaint after I hit two deer in Austin Texas.

Onward to 500k!

Ready, Set, Go

Eight years, 372k miles, and lots of memories behind the wheel.

Thought I’d kick this blog off with a little history lesson/recap on the old “front wheel drive sleigh” (bonus points if you know what movie that line came from) since there are a few hundred thousand miles to get caught up on.  This 1994 Legend LS coupe and I have been through a lot.  Nearly 40 U.S. states, in fact.   I figured it’s fitting that as my 8 year anniversary with this car approaches (we’ll celebrate this Saturday the 26th!) I should document a few of the past memories as well as track some of my future travels to the big half-million milestone.

Most memorable roadtrip by far was to Fairbanks, Alaska and back in 2006 with my dad.  That was a 7,600 mile roundtrip adventure through some of the most awesome terrain I’ve ever seen.  I’d like to someday achieve a visit to each of the 50 states in this Legend.  Hawaii I may need to leave until last since it’s a $1,000 ferry ride each way.  But it’ll happen!

I’ve had a ton of fun with odometer readings over the years, capturing 111,111.1 through 444,444.4, each the 100k milestones, 123,456.7 through 456,789.0 and some other random ones I’m sure.   Here are the dates at which I passed the major ones.

  • 100,000 miles: 5/20/2003

  • 200,000 miles: 12/3/2005

  • 300,000 miles: 7/29/2007

  • 400,000 miles: 10/30/2009

YouTube video of my 400,000 mile roll-over.

And a 450,000 mile roll-over.

So today, here’s a look at how far I’ve come over the last 8 great years.

Taking the keys on March 26, 2003 – San Jose, California:  95,000 miles

Today – March 21, 2011 – Fountain Hills, Arizona:  467,276 miles

And today’s odometer shot:

My maintenance is tracked religiously in an Excel spreadsheet.  Obsessive attention to detail – that’s the name of the game.  I can say with certainty that this car is on its original engine, transmission, and clutch.   The suspension is as it left the factory in Japan.  Same with the exhaust system.  The axles are original but with new boots.   The car has had 142 (documented!) oil changes over its lifetime so far, gone through 4 windshields, and had 5 different timing belts & water pumps at the recommended ~90k mile change interval.

And if you’re into numbers tracking, I’ve also killed two deer, a cat, as well as this unfortunate bird in Palm Springs CA.

The Legend got me through 3 college degrees and has lived at 6 different houses.  It’s been off-roaded, bottomed out, hauled hitchhikers, stuck in the snow, road raced twice in a 100-mile open road race called the Bonneville 100 in northern Nevada at over 100 mph, thrashed an autocross track in Springfield, Missouri, and dyno tested at 414,000 miles in St. George, Utah.  After all that abuse, it’s only been towed one time — when the original fuel pump died at around 399,750 miles on the 101 freeway, just a mile from my home in Scottsdale, Arizona.  I’d trust this old clunker across the country tomorrow.

Known issues – yes, there are plenty!   This car is not a mint condition showpiece.  She’s still rolling strong but is showing some wear and tear. Aside from some understandable cosmetic issues (clearcoat fade, chipped front end, bullseyed windshield), there are some mechanical issues to address too:

  • Leaking power steering pump
  • Rotors should probably be done (last changed at 89k miles!)
  • Original clutch is barely hanging on for dear life
  • Passenger side door lock actuator makes a loud noise when unlocking
  • Climate control blower motor has a mind of its own some of the time
  • Motor mounts and tranny mount need changed
  • Differential seal leaking (per Acura inspection)
  • All original suspension loves to creak and groan sometimes
  • Misc instrument cluster bulbs burned out
  • Infrequent Code 12 Check Engine Light for the EGR system, though I’ve replaced everything!

Aside from all that, this car drives as rock solid at 467k as it did when I bought it at 95k. It starts on the first crank every time. I drive it to work every weekday. No smoking, no oil leaking, doesn’t use a drop of oil between changes. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across the country at a moment’s notice. I still easily get 30+ mpg on highway drives in 6th with conservative driving habits. I use nothing but 91 octane fuel, and 5W30 oil at 3k intervals.

Where to go from here?  Keep an eye on this blog for the updates as I roll onward in the Legend for the half million milestone.  I’ll be celebrating at 477,000 (that means the car’s been driven to the moon and back) as well as definitely doing some quality countdown documentation as we near the big 5 together.  Drive onward!
