Long Way Home & Clint’s Vigor

Here’s a flashback as well as a clue as to why I got so hooked on Acura at a young age.  This picture is from about 1996.  I was 15 years old and obsessing over a family member’s 1989 Legend LS coupe in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Little did I know that 15 years later I’d be blogging about my travels in a half million mile Legend of my own!

My current home is located just a block away from a large Indian reservation called the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.  This land covers about 53,000 acres and borders the Arizona cities of Scottsdale, Mesa, and Fountain Hills.  I drive through the reservation each day on my way home from work as a way of bypassing the congested southbound Loop 101 freeway, even though it adds about 10 miles to my drive.  Yesterday, I decided to take a side road and see if I passed by anything worth a closer look.

At the other end of the mileage spectrum, I thought I’d also share a few new pictures of my friend Clint’s immaculate 1992 Acura Vigor GS that you may remember from a prior post.  The Vigor is a bit of a rare breed, having only been produced for 1992, 1993, and 1994.  Clint recently took his Frost White Acura on a round-trip to Phoenix from southern Utah (about 800 miles) and the car handled the trip flawlessly.  He said he’s now just over 90,000 miles in the old 5-cylinder sedan.  A fresh coat of wax and she looks showroom fresh.  Thanks Clint for sharing these latest pictures!

Marathon Miles

How’s that for an illustration of mileage differences!  I had the opportunity yesterday afternoon to accompany my friend Matt with his mom who was looking for a new vehicle.  She ended up buying a gorgeous graphite-colored Infiniti G37 coupe that had 20 miles on it, or about 505,370 miles less than my Acura Legend!  New off the lot.  I wonder if I’ll ever own anything so new.

When she brought it by my house in the evening, it had 39 miles on the odometer, and I was allowed to drive it about 6 miles to meet up with friends at a local car show.  I’ll be curious to see if the Infiniti’s got what it takes to get to half a million and beyond.  It sure does look and ride nice!

It was another in-town weekend for the old Legend but with plenty of running around.  Since my mom was in town, we had some sights (and people) to see over the past couple of days.  She and I had registered about a year ago to participate in a half marathon race together.

After picking up our runner information packets at the Phoenix Convention Center on Saturday morning, we drove up historic Central Avenue to meet a couple of friends for brunch at The Good Egg.  En route, we passed by a number of important landmarks, including this hotel called the Westward Ho.  Completed in 1928, it was the tallest building in Arizona until 1960.  The hotel itself closed in 1979.

Since we’re on the subject of mileage achievements:  This morning we participated in the Rock & Roll Arizona Half Marathon.  The 13.1-mile race started in downtown Tempe, Arizona, and ran a huge loop through the cities of Scottsdale and Phoenix, then back to Tempe for the finish.  We couldn’t have asked for better race-day weather, at 60 degrees and overcast.

This is a picture with my mom at the start line in our assigned corral.  Literally thousands of people participated.  We were herded like cattle!

Post-race and back to our shuttle vehicle.

And finally a farewell as mom caught her early afternoon flight from Phoenix to Salt Lake City at “Sky Harbor” airport.

Bon Voyage!

Lots of seat-time for the Legend driver and its passengers this weekend as we made the trek as far north as Ogden, Utah, some 757 miles away from my home in Scottsdale.  The drive, though, was totally worth it.  I got to see my new niece & nephew and have a great holiday with my family.

Wednesday afternoon – heading northbound from Phoenix after a short & sweet day at the office.  Quick stop for road treats in Wickenburg, Arizona.

Friday morning, St. George, Utah at my brother’s place.  Legend gets dwarfed by my brother’s 2011 Ford pickup with 40″ tires

Northbound Interstate 15 in central Utah.  Yes, I yielded the driver’s seat to my friend Jeremy for a 2.5 hour stretch of the drive to Salt Lake City!

Central Utah scenery.

Saturday morning, Salt Lake City, Utah.  A very chilly & frosty 25 degrees Fahrenheit and the Legend cranked right up – well, on the second try at least.  It’s a tired old motor!

My friends and I again went to see the steam locomotive, Union Pacific 844, which is nearing the end of its journey of the southwest United States and returning home to Cheyenne, Wyoming soon.  This picture taken at the train station in Ogden, Utah.  A legend meets a Legend (again).

Heading back to St. George, Utah on Saturday evening.  This is my favorite time of day to drive.  Interstate 15 southbound, taken near Nephi, Utah.

Earlier this week I redeemed my first “complimentary” oil change on the Legend, thanks to the folks at Acura Parts & Service in Torrance, CA at the company’s headquarters.  My receipt from Acura North Scottsdale from 502,050 miles states “Extended Warranty.”  That’s one great extension!  I definitely intend on getting the car’s upper front control arms checked out as well as taking a look at the EGR system.  We got a code 12 check engine light a couple of times on this trip – probably just something that needs to be cleaned out & reset.

All in all another successful voyage for the now-seasoned Legend.

Hope all my readers had a great holiday!

For kicks one time, I “borrowed” a Pizza Hut sign to install on top of my car.  I don’t think I’d ever subject my Acura to pizza-delivery status, but the thought of getting paid to put miles on my car was definitely appealing, as was the thought of smelling pepperoni while driving down the road.

Today I took a quick but refreshing Sunday morning drive to enjoy some views along Arizona Hwy 87 toward the town of Payson.  These pictures were taken at the turnoff to Sycamore Creek Campground.

Then the car got a much needed bath and detail.  I’m a believer in Meguiar’s products and I treated the car to the “step 3” carnauba liquid wax by hand after a thorough wash.  For (most of) the paint being 18 years old, it still cleans up pretty nicely.  My car was manufactured in October 1993 so I guess that means it’s finally an adult this month.  Celebrate!

The reflection here is of my friend Matt’s Maxima in the garage where he was working on an oil change.  Pretty shiny paint for being original to this old Acura.

On the interior, I turned to Griot’s Garage for my preferred leather conditioner called Leather Care.  It looks good, smells good, and works great.  The seats on my car were recovered in 2003 with a kit from Katzkin.  The original leather covers in the car were actually at the time still in decent enough condition to sell.  I’ve been really happy with this aftermarket two-tone setup and it’s held up amazingly.

One thing that I love about Arizona is its landscape diversity.  In some parts of the state, the terrain looks like what I’ve posted above from today’s drive, but just a few hours away you can find yourself in an environment that looks totally out of this world.  If I were to pick my absolute favorite landscape scenery in the entire country, it would be found this place.  At 337,000 miles, in July 2008 I took a road trip there.

These particular views are only accessible via a 17-mile dirt road. The cost was $5 to enter the Navajo National tribal park (it’s all on Indian land). Most visitors opt to pay to have the Indians take them on a guided tour (the road is not recommended for cars on a lot of websites I checked) but of course I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to do a little 4×4 action in the coupe.

I even had my brother’s marketing guy throw together a 24×36 poster of the Legend recently, and the main picture was one that I captured in Monument Valley.  This is a 10MB image that should be suitable for download if any of you would like to do the same!

Also noteworthy:  Monument Valley is not far from four corners, which is the only place in the country where you can stand in 4 different states at once.  I did that in a June, 2005 “Utah Tour” trip with about 176,000 miles on the Legend.

Also stopped to see Hole In the Rock, a complete 5,000-square-foot home that was carved out of a sandstone mountain.  I took a tour for $5 — well worth it if you’re ever in the area!

And finally I buzzed over past Mancos, Colorado at a gift shop near Mesa Verde National Park where telephone poles have been driven into the ground sideways and painted like giant arrows.

Closing in on my goal – and enjoying every mile in the meantime!  Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Logan, Utah

After a Friday of clock-watching at the office, I set sail on a weekend adventure to the north country yet again yesterday.

I’d been meaning to snag a picture at this sign the last few times I drove past it in Wickenburg, Arizona.

These Arizona sunsets just never seem to get old.  I had Highway 93 to myself for most of the northwesterly drive toward Las Vegas, Nevada from the Phoenix area.

Las Vegas!  I visited a few friends at the Westin Hotel who were celebrating my friend Jim’s 30th birthday.  This was taken on Flamingo Road approaching Interstate 15 from the east.  Happy birthday, Jim!

Finally I had a late-night arrival into Utah, finally calling it a night around 1 a.m. local time.

Today’s drive to Logan was “only” about 400 miles, or 6 hours.  I got an early start and chowed on some Mickey D’s breakfast from Fillmore, Utah.  The one thing that always surprises the passengers in my car is that my $42k Acura does not have any cupholders.  In the manual transmission-equipped 1991-1995 Legends, the pop-out cupholder was deleted from the lid of the center console. As a result, I end up finding other means – usually by holding a drink in my lap or balancing it inside the center console like I did with my orange juice this morning.

In Salt Lake City, I visited my friend Branson at his workplace – CU Auto Sales.  Branson’s 1995 Legend LS coupe has been featured on this blog before when he allowed me to use it as a “loaner” car during a weekend trip to Utah over the 4th of July weekend this year.  It’s minty and has only around 142k on the odometer.

Next up, I said hello to my friend Jeremy who recently took delivery of  brand new Acura TSX Sport Wagon.  Jeremy and I grabbed lunch and he tossed me the keys to the wagon so I could drive for the return trip.  I loved the TSX!  It was quite a change for me to look down at an odometer with only 600 miles on it.  Open wide!

This thing is cavernous!  Here’s my Vanna White pose inside the cargo area.

Finally I paid a visit to the grandparents in Cache Valley (Logan, Utah) – near the Idaho border at the far north end of the state.  The rains came down heavily in Sardine Canyon but the Michelins handled it well.  Grandma loves it when visitors take “laps” around her house while driving on the grass!

At the entrance to the south end of town on Highway 89-91, there’s an old drive-in movie theater that was painted over and serves a billboard for the university where I attended school in 2004-2005.  Go Aggies!

The rains cleared tonight and I got a clear view of the great mountains that surround the valley.

I guess the Utah sunsets aren’t half bad either.

I’ll make the return trip to Phoenix tomorrow.  The Legend is running like a champ but I’ve made an appointment to have the suspension looked at again this coming week.  There’s some significant noise coming from the front end on abrupt bumps and I have a feeling the upper controls arms are to blame.  I’m also contemplating biting the bullet and having the brake rotors changed since they’re well overdue.  I was hoping to keep this last 5,000 miles of the Drive to Five fairly maintenance-free but let’s see what my mechanics have to say about that this week.

Had to use the heater tonight for the first time since last winter!

At this point, I’ve personally put 400,000 miles on this car since I bought it in March, 2003.  It’s been a fun ride!

St. George, Utah

TOP TEN COUNTDOWN now in effect!

It’s all downhill from here.  The big 4-9-0 was achieved on Interstate 17 southbound in Glendale, Arizona this afternoon near the Thunderbird Road exit.  I’d been returning from a trip to my homeland.

If a bridge existed over the Grand Canyon, I’d probably have a lot fewer miles on my car than I do today.  The Great State of Utah is where my roots lie and where all my family currently resides, so I end up going around the nat’l park frequently.  The Legend could drive itself to Utah on autopilot from just about any direction.  I typically visit my hometown in the southwestern corner of the state at least once a month – a roughly 400 mile, 6 hour trip from the PHX metro area each way.  After leaving Los Angeles on Saturday morning, I set out northbound to UT instead of eastbound to AZ.

The trek through the Mojave Desert from the LA area to St. George is a breeze.  It only takes one freeway, I-15, to get from A to B.  I hadn’t driven this stretch of road in several years so I took the chance to appreciate a couple of my highlights on this particular trip:

Between the desert cities of Barstow and Baker, California, lies a road known as Zzyzx.  I captured this image while holding the camera out of my open sunroof.  Besides being a fun word to look at, the road does have a bit of history.

Credit to Wikipedia for the following background:  The name Zzyzx was given to the area in 1944 by Curtis Howe Springer, claiming it to be the last word in the English language. Springer made up the word’s pronunciation “zy-zicks”. He established the Zzyzx Mineral Springs and Health Spa in 1944 at the spot, which was federal land, after filing mining claims for 12,000 acres surrounding the springs. He used the springs to bottle his water and provide drinks for travelers through the hot desert.

In light of the fact that I captured a picture at the World’s Largest Firecracker last weekend, I had to make a pit stop at the World’s Tallest Thermometer on Saturday.  This particular engineering marvel is significant because of its announcement of Baker, California as the gateway to Death Valley.  It was also the first backdrop I ever used during a photoshoot with my Legend.  I made a stop here on my drive home to Utah after purchasing the car in San Jose, California on the night of March 27, 2003.  Here is the picture from that day many years ago.  Pic of a pic = poor quality.  This was back in the olden days of 35mm film.

And the current version from this weekend.  Thankfully the car looks largely the same even after all those miles.  It certainly runs just as well.

The thermometer is the most prominent feature of this town of around 700 people.  It stands 134 feet tall – a number significant because that was the highest temperature recorded in Death Valley (see my blog post from last weekend!).

Hidden among my cargo for this trip was a set of 17″ Toyota wheels that I had picked up in AZ for my brother to deliver to him.  This is far from the first time my Legend has doubled as a pickup truck.  When I managed to fit four full size SUV wheels including tires into my 2 door car last week, the look on the seller’s face was priceless.

Quick shout-out to my friend Jeremy who drove to St. George this weekend and spent a little bit of time with me and my family.  He’s the one who encouraged me to start this blog in the first place.  He’s got pretty good taste in cars too and is as loyal to Lexus as I am to Acura.

Before the Phoenix return trip this morning, I stopped for a quick picture on the hill overlooking town. The DIXIE painted on the side of the sandstone ledge denotes this area as “Utah’s Dixie” since it was settled in the 1800’s by Mormon pioneers who were sent to the area to grow cotton.  Look extra closely at this picture and you’ll see some adventurous people rappelling – one atop the rock, and another inside the “D.”

The most prominent building, to the right of the frame, is the Mormon temple.

Despite the opening of the Hoover Dam bypass bridge, there’s still a traffic bottleneck in that area on summer weekends and today was no exception.  I hit about a 15-minute delay but otherwise today’s return trip to PHX was most enjoyable.  My favorite stretch of “straight line” road lies just south of the dam access road (laugh it up, I said dam road).  It’s Hwy 93 and it leads you to Kingman, Arizona on a 60 mile journey where you literally can just leave your steering wheel positioned straight ahead and not touch it for the duration.  Boring to some, but I find it a great chance to set the cruise control and just space out a little bit to some good music while watching the desert fly by.

I’m often asked if I have any predictions on where or when the 500,000 mark will roll around.  At this point, I’m really not sure!  Looking ahead to the next 10,000 miles, I don’t anticipate any major roadblocks to getting me there.  Mechanically there are only a few things on the car that I’d say may need some attention.

  • That clutch – I keep saying it – continues to perform but is definitely not happy about it.  It will be a real feat to milk another 10k out of the original.  In the meantime, my left leg gets a workout.
  • Brake rotors.  They’re original too!  Per my records, they were machined at 37,409 miles by Pleasanton Acura and then machined again at 89,784 miles by Precision Auto Repair.  I’ve never touched them during my ownership which started at 95,000, but have done a few sets of pads along the way.
  • I still haven’t changed the multi-crack windshield but at this point, I’d rather just roll around with the old one as long as I can.

I’ll close out with a sunset pic from last week at my home.  Arizona has the best sunsets!  Onward to 500,000.

Utah Roadtrip… Without the Legend

Posted in Misc Travel, Utah on July 6, 2011 by tysonhugie

Odometer:  480,150

The Legend sat in hibernation for 3 days while I roamed around the hills of northern Utah visiting family and friend over the long Independence Day weekend.  My parents live just over 800 miles north of the Phoenix area in a small valley of northern Utah.  I was glad for any excuse to again retreat to lower temperatures and also get a chance to see my new niece.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a mileage accumulation weekend for the trusty old Legend as it sat in the garage from Friday through Monday.  A couple of weeks ago, my friend Jeremy had me transport a local 1997 Lexus SC400 for him which he’d received as part of an inheritance.  Just over 70,000 miles, original owner, rare “renaissance red” with two-tone interior.  I was happy to oblige as I’ve always been a fan of the Lexus coupes.  My next task became getting the car to Jeremy in Salt Lake City, so my friend Matt and I saddled up in the luxo-coupe and rolled northward last Friday night.

Here’s a photo of the coupes together pre-departure.  The $56k Lexus is a fine ride but excludes some of the features I’ve come to love in my Legend and was never (except in the 6 cylinder version) offered in a manual transmission so the driving experience was a bit sedated for my tastes.  Still, there’s nothing quite like the sound (albeit heavily dampened) of a V8 motor at wide open throttle.  Mmmm.

As luck would have it, once Matt and I got to Salt Lake City, my friend Branson allowed me the keys to his Cayman White Pearl 1995 Legend LS coupe 6-speed.  Since he works for a local dealership, Branson was able to snag a vehicle off the lot for the weekend and I used his Legend as my rental for the next couple of days.  Silky smooth (freshly clayed) paint, new leather, sporty TL Type S wheels.  This car’s about as close to mint condition as you can get at 142,000 miles.  We drove past the home in Logan, Utah (only 20 minutes or so from the Idaho border) where I grew up.  The yard has changed but the memories are still there!  I lived in this home from ages 5 through 12.

Two great days of food, family, and fun later, it was time to head back to Salt Lake City and hop on a US Airways flight back to Phoenix.  It was great to see the fireworks displays from my window seat at 11F and to be back at home with my comfy memory foam bed.  I’d wondered if the Legend would fire up on the first try since I’ve been told the battery is junk, but indeed the car came to life immediately when it was time to head to work this morning.  Lots of preparations to do in the next couple of weeks before I head on my cross-country adventure to New Jersey.

Here’s one last shot of Sardine Canyon as it descends into Cache Valley where Logan lies.

Easter Car Show

Posted in Legend, Road Trip, Utah on April 25, 2011 by tysonhugie

Every year for the last 8 years, I’ve attended a car show held in the town of Hurricane, in the southwestern corner of Utah.  It’s an Easter weekend tradition.  I’ve entered a few different cars over the years but the high mileage coupe has been shown at least 3 or 4 times.

My friend Branson and his dad Don have been restoring a 1965 Ford Mustang for the last couple of years and they drove down from Salt Lake City to enter it in its first show, so I decided to throw the old Legend in the show one more time.  Despite the clear coat fade and some rock chips that even the bra can’t cover up, the car cleans up pretty well for its age and mileage!  I displayed the original window sticker, a printout of my maintenance worksheet, and swapped out the dirty “daily” floor mats for a new-in-the-box set that have never been stepped on.  The night before the sh0w, I also installed a set of 19″ Racing Hart C2 wheels that I picked up many years ago and use for shows and special occasions.

This particular car show is dominated largely by classics & muscle cars, but the Legend got plenty of attention and was well received.  It’s interesting how the car seems to attract people from all age ranges.  I talked with one woman who wished she’d “Never sold the Legend!” because her newer Acura wasn’t nearly as fun to drive.  The old Legend ended up taking home 2nd place in the Import class.  Branson and Don won 3rd place in the “1973 & Older Mustang” class.  Much deserved recognition!  Congratulations to them.

Here Branson and I are pictured with our trophies and cars after the show, at Pioneer Park in St. George, Utah.

Today I returned from St. George to Phoenix via Las Vegas (~400 mi) and it was smooth sailing with minimal traffic.  I had a FULL car.   In addition to my suitcase and some other misc stuff, I was hauling the four Racing Hart wheels/tires (in bags in the back seat) and a set of four 17″ TL Type-S wheels that I was transporting for a friend.  The coupe’s interior capacity is quite impressive!  Just north of Wickenburg, AZ  at milepost 193 on US 93, I was pulled over and issued a warning for a window tint violation.  Can’t survive in Arizona without window tint!

Most recent maintenance was an oil change at Acura North Scottsdale at 470,500 miles before this Utah trip.  There was no inspection provided at the time so I can only assume that the maintenance issues are status quo from last time.  Car still starts, runs, drives like a champ.
